De-prescribing is a new term meaning the reduction or withdrawal of medication.

There are now three common conditions where continued reliance on large doses of medication may not be necessary, they are type 2 diabetes, high blood pressure and high blood fats.

Type 2 diabetes can be reversed with a low carb diet. After a very short time oral medications may be able to be reduced or ceased.

High blood pressure will respond to a low carb diet, reductions in dose of medication can take place under supervision soon after starting a low carb diet.

High blood fats. Cholesterol has been blamed for causing heart disease. The “bad fat” is actually triglyceride not cholesterol. Triglycerides are produced in the liver from dietary sugars. A better measure of problem fats is the ratio of fasting triglycerides to HDL cholesterol. A value of less than 1 is ideal. Additionally a fasting triglyceride of less than one is preferred. Statins may not be necessary.
